Sara Abbott is an American artist based in Santa Monica, California. Her latest paintings speak about architecture, design and materiality by using texture and monochromatic color fields. The use of line and shapes enhance the layering of pigment in these paintings, which allows the surfaces to absorb and reflect light. Abbott’s methods of manipulating paint and depths of texture are evocative of post-Minimalism.
In Apogee (2020), for example, a square painting on acrylic incorporates copper segments that rise and fall spreading vertically, while the layering of black oil, epoxy and acrylic medium in Spellbinder 2 (2020) form an alternating pattern of upright and upturned triangle shapes.
